Round-up of Desi Stand-ups

The title is quite a mouthful isn't it? Besides one or two top names, Desi comedians are hard to find. Still we've managed to combine the following list of Desi stand-ups out there:

1. Russell Dominic Peters
Russell Peter hails from Brampton, ON and his parents are from Bombay. He's sold more tickets to comedy shows in Canada than any other comedian. Like most other Desi stand-ups, Russell's main focus is South Asian stereotypes.

2. Shazia Mirza
This British Comedian of Pakistani origin has some pretty controversial routines, and has apparently received some death threats because of her performances. But she is funny, no doubt.

3. Imrana Zaman
Born in Pakistan and raised in Detroit, Imrana started doing comedy recently stand-up after moving to New York (or is it New Jersey). Check out her first performance at the Laugh Lounge.

4. Rasikha Mathur
Her claim to fame is a recurring role on MTV's Wild'n'Out, but she's also a full time stand-up comedian. She grew up in Houston, TX.

That's it for now, although we're sure that we've missed tons of them. So here's a link to a Google Video Search for desi comedians. Add your own top picks in the comments below.

7-Elevens turned in to Kwik-e-Marts

A bunch of 7-Elevens around the US and Canada were recently converted to Kwik-e-Marts, the fictional convenient store from the Simpsons. And if you haven't been living under the rock for the past 20 years, you'd know that Kwik-e-Mart is owned by Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, your stereotypical desi 7-Eleven leasee. The was done as part of the promotions for the upcoming Simpsons Movie.

Kwik-e-Mart Promo PosterThere are only twelve Kwik-e-Marts in North America, so you might have some difficulty in getting to one if you live off-the-grid. Mind you the change isn't just a signboard replacement, the stores are actually selling products from the Simpsons store, such as Squishees, Buzz Cola and Krusty-Os cereal.

A Converted 7-Eleven-Kwik-e-Mart Some people seem to think that this is very racist. But then again what isn't? Has the majority of population started liking African Americans since the civil rights movement? I don't think so. Even desis are notoriously racist towards Blacks. So take the sand out of your vaginas and laugh a little, even if you're poking fun at your own kind.

Bonus: Here're some nice shots of a converted store, and some videos on YouTube.

'Bollywood' enters Webster's dictionary

Merriam-Webster, the publishers of the Webster's dictionary have officially added the word "bollywood" in to their dictionary as part of the new additions for 2007.

Some other words in the ~100 adds include sudoku, smackdown, DVR and "speed dating". The last one is obviously not a word, rather a phrase, but perhaps some one at M-W liked that scene from the 40 Year Old Virgin too much. Also added was the word ginormous, which was reported voted the favorite word not in the dictionary in 2005.

Aishwariya: Hollywood shot take 2

Aishwarya Rai stars in an action packed adventure drama set against the fall of Rome that tells the story of its last emperor, the young Romulus Augustus, who flees the city and all that he loves: his family, his home, and an empire that once stood for truth and honor, to lead a legion of supporters on a perilous voyage to Britain.
